I am more and more convinced that we face an epidemic called addictions largely because we live in a culture that has forgotten that The “Path of least RESISTANCE” will often remove any “Needed RESISTANCE” to choosing a healthy life over a dysfunctional life. Our God-given convictions are bypassed to the quick and new-fangled way to cope – and we medicate to avoid feeling what we don’t want to feel.
“Narrow is the path to life broad is the path to destruction.”
There is strength gained in the up hill path from the down and out valleys of our lives.
Opioids and other drugs are an effortless way to change how we feel. And it works until it doesn’t. Then the addict finds themselves in a broad landslide downward.
Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
There are those who know where to start and can point to the narrow gate. We need to “hang with the winners” The narrow gate is the one that can be passed by because it is no longer a well-worn path.
I pray for us all as we fight and not give up seeking God’s grace to share freedom from addictions. Too many have died. If it takes opening 100 Jericho Houses it will be worth it.
The answers to this epidemic are going to take time. We did not get to this place in our society overnight so it will take time. The change will come through mended relationships while learning to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. If you are a recovering addict you may need structure around you to ensure lasting change. The Jericho House, along with other long-term programs can help discover underlying issues that have caused you to self-medicate and to feel hopeless and guilty. It will take a little time but it is worth it -No- YOU are worth it!
